Visa Considerations for Long-term Stays in Thailand

Phuket offers an impressive balance of service quality and affordability, attracting numerous foreigners interested in living in the Land of a Thousand Smiles for an extended period. However, standard tourist visas, which only last up to 90 days (60+30 days), often do not suffice for those intending to stay longer.

Thailand's visa policy, although not overly complicated, can appear somewhat intricate. The Kingdom provides a diverse array of visa options for those vacationing or residing in the country. Therefore, identifying the most suitable visas for long-term stays is essential.

What types of visas are suitable for long-term stays?

Thailand Elite Visa

This particular visa grants the opportunity to reside in Thailand for periods ranging from 5 to 20 years. The Thailand Elite Visa distinguishes itself through its streamlined application process, eliminating the need for individuals to submit 90-day residence registration notifications independently. Moreover, applicants are not required to show the origin of funds or provide a bank statement. The necessary documentation includes a passport, a photograph, and an official application form. The entire process takes up to 3 months, with only a criminal background check of the applicant being conducted.

Visa fees for the Thailand Elite Visa begin at 600,000 baht (for family applications, the cost is 400,000 baht per person). One of the most popular options within the Thailand Elite Visa category is the 20-year visa, priced at 1,000,000 baht ($27,800). This translates to a mere 50,000 baht ($1,400) per year. Payments are made upon visa approval and cover a full 5-year period.

Holders of the Thailand Elite Visa enjoy additional privileges, such as simplified immigration control procedures, airport-to-residence transfers, and discounts at various spa salons, among other benefits.

Student Visa

The Student Visa is designed for individuals enrolled in a Thai university or language courses. The duration of the visa depends on the length of the study program, with a maximum validity of one year and the option to extend. This visa offers an excellent opportunity for adaptation during the initial years while simultaneously enhancing language skills. Popular languages offered for study include Thai, French, and Chinese. Educational institutions generally assist with document preparation, and the costs are determined by the type and location of the study program.

Dependent Visa

The Dependent/Guardian Visa is granted for up to one year to family members of a foreign national who is studying or working in the Kingdom of Thailand. If your child is enrolled in a school or kindergarten in the Kingdom, you may obtain a guardian visa. Please note that only one parent can secure a visa for a single child.

Business Visa

The Business Visa is designed for those who intend to conduct business in Thailand. It is a long-term visa without a time limit, allowing for a permanent stay in the country. The visa is issued upon obtaining employment or establishing a company.

This visa is often the preferred choice for individuals who purchase property under the ownership of their Thai company, thereby acquiring land ownership. (For more information on forms of ownership, please refer to the provided link.)

Estimated costs associated with opening and maintaining a company include:

  • Company formation: starting from 50,000 Baht
  • Accounting and annual balance: starting from 15,000 Baht/year
  • Business visa application: approximately 100,000 Baht

Please note that the business visa must be renewed annually. Additionally, while in Thailand, you are required to report to the Immigration Office every 90 days.
